Tick vaccine (TBE)

Tick-borne encephalitis, TBE, is a serious disease transmitted to humans via ticks. There is no treatment for TBE. It is therefore important to get vaccinated against TBE if you stay in areas where TBE infection occurs.

TBE virus is found, among other things, in small rodents. They do not get sick themselves, but can transmit the virus to ticks, which, via their saliva, pass it on to the next animal or human that the tick bites. Birds and larger mammals can transport infected ticks over long distances.

Age limit

TBE vaccine is given to children from the age of 1.

Vaccination – Interval

The basic vaccination against TBE consists of three doses. Usually you get two doses 1–3 months apart. The third dose can be taken no earlier than 5 months and no later than 12 months after dose 2. The third dose should be given within the same tick season, or at least before the next tick season begins.

To maintain your protection, you need to take a fourth dose three years after the third dose and then a dose every five years. Alternative vaccination schedule may be relevant if you are older or have a weakened immune system.

Prevenar & Pneumovax

Pneumonia

Pneumonia can affect anyone and cause serious complications. The disease primarily affects older people, the sick or people with a weakened immune system. Fortunately, there are vaccines against pneumonia.

There are two different types of pneumonia vaccines: Prevenar and Pneumovax. Pneumovax is subsidized by the county council if you belong to a risk group and is therefore free, while Prevenar has to be paid for yourself. Prevenar is considered a better vaccine that protects better.

You are recommended a vaccine if any of the following are true:

  • You are 65 years or older.
  • You have a severely weakened immune system or lack a spleen.
  • You have cystic fibrosis.
  • You have a cochlear implant operated on.

Vaccines are also recommended for certain other diseases and conditions, but then an assessment of your need for vaccines may first be necessary. This is because the risk of getting a serious infection is also affected by other things. You may need a vaccine if, for example, one of the following is true:

  • You have a chronic disease of the heart, lungs or liver
  • You have chronic kidney failure.
  • You have a disease that makes the lungs work worse or that it is difficult to cough, for example a chronic neurological disease.
    You have diabetes.
You smoke or have an alcohol addiction.

Vaccination – Interval

Pneumovax – One dose.

Prevenar – Two doses with an interval of at least two months between doses. Healthy people usually do not need a second dose. However, people with an increased risk of serious pneumococcal infection (for example, people who have no spleen or if it is not working properly) may be recommended another dose of the vaccine, usually between 3 and 5 years after the first dose.
